Giriş: Akademik ve mesleki unvanlar, doktorların bilgilerini ve becerilerini kazanmak için kat ettikleri uzun yolu ve harcadıkları emeği yansıtır. Uluslararası alanda bu unvanlardan en bilineni Amerikan Cerrahlar Derneği (American College of Surgeons) tarafından verilen Amerikan Cerrahlar Derneği Üyesi (Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS)) unvanıdır. FACS, cerrahların belirli mesleki, etik ve akademik koşulları sağlamalarının ardından; diplomalarının incelenmesi, meslektaşları tarafından değerlendirilmesi ve derneğe kabul süreci tamamlandıktan sonra verilen, tüm dünyada tanınan bir unvandır. Ancak, Türk Cerrahi Derneği üyelerinin isimlerinden sonra kullanabilecekleri resmî bir kısaltma bulunmamaktadır.

Yöntem: Bu çalışmada, Amerikan Cerrahlar Derneği tarafından, FACS unvanının hangi koşullarda verildiğini, nasıl kullanıldığını ve cerrahların mesleki kimliğine ne şekilde katkı sağladığını inceledik. Bu bilgilerin ışığında Türkiye’ye uygun, sade ve anlaşılır bir unvan kısaltması önerisini geliştirdik. 

Bulgular: “Türk Cerrahi Derneği Üyesi” ifadesinin kısaltması olarak “TCDÜ” ifadesini öneriyoruz. Önerdiğimiz unvanın kullanımı “Doç. Dr. Mehmet Eren Yüksel, TCDÜ” şeklinde olacaktır. Bu kısaltma, herhangi bir akademik dereceyi, idari görevi veya resmî unvanı değil; genel cerrahi uzmanı olmayı başarmış ve Türk Cerrahi Derneği’ne üye olma hakkını kazanmış olmayı ifade etmektedir.

Tartışma: Genel cerrahi uzmanı olmak, tıp fakültesi eğitiminin ardından uzun yıllar süren yoğun bir asistanlık dönemini, sorumluluk almayı, sürekli öğrenmeyi ve ciddi bir özveriyi gerektirir. Gece gündüz demeden çalışılan bu süreç; mesleki bilgi ve teknik becerinin yanısıra sabır ve dayanıklılık gerektirir. Bu zorlu yolun sonunda genel cerrahi uzmanı olabilmek ve Türk Cerrahi Derneği’ne üye olarak kabul edilmek, her cerrah için haklı bir gurur ve mutluluk kaynağıdır. TCDÜ kısaltması, işbu yoğun emeğin, uzun mesleki yolculuğun ve ulaşılan mesleki olgunluğun görünür bir simgesi olacaktır.

Sonuç: Türk Cerrahi Derneği üyeleri kullanacağı TCDÜ kısaltması, doktorların isimleri ile birlikte yazılacak; genel cerrahi uzmanı olmanın zorluğu ile mutluluğunu ve dernek üyeliğinin gururunu hem ulusal hem de uluslararası alanda yansıtacaktır.

Proposal Of The Abbreviation “TCDÜ” For Membership Of The Turkish Surgical Society

Introduction: Academic and professional titles reflect the long path and the effort physicians undertake to acquire their knowledge and skills. Internationally, the most widely recognized of these titles is the designation Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), awarded by the American College of Surgeons. The FACS title is conferred after surgeons fulfill specific professional, ethical, and academic criteria, following credential verification, peer review, and formal admission to the College, and is recognized worldwide. However, members of the Turkish Surgical Society do not have an official post-nominal abbreviation that they can use after their names.

Methods: In this study, we examined under which conditions the FACS title is awarded by the American College of Surgeons, how it is used, and how it contributes to the professional identity of surgeons. In light of this information, we developed a simple and clear post-nominal abbreviation suitable for Türkiye.

Results: We propose the abbreviation “TCDÜ” as the short form of “Member of the Turkish Surgical Society” (Türk Cerrahi Derneği Üyesi). The recommended use of this designation would be “Assoc. Prof. Mehmet Eren Yüksel, TCDÜ.” This abbreviation does not represent an academic degree, an administrative position, or an official governmental title; rather, it indicates that the physician has completed training in general surgery and has obtained the right to be a member of the Turkish Surgical Society.

Discussion: Becoming a general surgeon requires completion of medical school followed by many years of intensive residency training, assumption of responsibility, continuous learning, and substantial personal dedication. This demanding process, characterized by work around the clock, requires not only professional knowledge and technical skill but also patience and endurance. At the end of this challenging journey, achieving board certification in general surgery and being accepted as a member of the Turkish Surgical Society is a legitimate source of pride and satisfaction for every surgeon. The abbreviation TCDÜ would serve as a visible symbol of this extensive effort, long professional journey, and attained level of professional maturity.

Conclusion: The abbreviation TCDÜ, to be used by members of the Turkish Surgical Society after their names, would reflect nationally and internationally both the challenge and the fulfillment of becoming a general surgeon and the prestige of society membership.
